VW CEO Herbert Diess said that demand is strong for all of the automaker’s EVs, including the ID.3 and ID.4, Audi electric vehicles, and Skoda in Europe. Volkswagen wants to build 700,000 EVs in 2022, but the world has not been kind to automakers so far this year. Pandemic-related lockdowns and supply chain issues have put a damper on VW’s ability to build and sell EVs in China. The German carmaker only sold 28,800 EVs in the country during the first quarter of 2022, well off track to meet its goal of 140,000 vehicles.
Volkswagen isn’t alone in this boat. All automakers have faced difficulties and parts shortages, causing major auto suppliers like Bosch to lower their 2022 production forecasts.
